What is a "pin gun"

I heard that term used in a conversation the other day. Discussion was related to cowboy action / SA revolvers...
I know - should have asked then, but...

It's a sport where you shoot at bowling pins lined up at a fixed distance. Since bowling pins are heavy, you have to smack them good with a heavy bullet to get them to fall.

Hitting them in the right place, is also critical. Hit on the upper 2/3's. Likely causes them to flop over, but still remain on the table.

Not as easy as it looks. When your shooting against the clock, and competent opponents.

Most pin guns you see are 1911's with a compensator. Like Neal and Rufe said, you're shooting against the clock, and you need a heavy load to knock a pin over.
When I was shooting speed steel, there was a guy there with a buddy all the time practicing on pins, and they both used Ruger .44 Blackhawks. Both of them could get six rounds off on target as fast as I could with a 1911.
