Guys,
I have an 878 that had a bent and loose left shell stop... I replaced the shell stop. cleaned, test fired, and everything seemed good... The magazine follower will not return to battery every time... I would like to remove the follower and spring, in order to clean the tube and inspect the follower and spring...
The mag. tube is staked to hold the spring retainer, spring and follower... How do I get the damn thing apart?????
TIA,
JIM.......................

did the Remington instructions help ?
See if you could get access to a copy of, Brownells "Encyclopedia of Modern Firearms". It has a lot of specific info, on the older guns. As the 878 has been out of production, for going on to 60 years. It might have the info your seeking?

Bob, he shows everything "except" removing the mag spring and follower.
Worked on plenty of Model 58's that the 878 replaced, but the mag spring retainer pops right out on a 58. The mag tube is threaded to the receiver, but Remington silver soldered them to the frame.
I've done one 878 years ago, but I seem to remember it being like Mike Wiskey does. Tried to find a pic of the retainer, and this is what Numrich shows:
