Exactly what is it to "Cryo" a barrel?

Well thanks to many here I got my scope mounted on my PSS and it is super nice,BTW whoever suggested that reticle leveler was on the money, thanks.I've got the bipod on its way and I'm running out of goodies to put on my PSS.Does anyone have an idea of the degree of increased accuracy I could get with the "Cryo" process?and does it have to be done before I break in the barrel or can I do it at a later date? While I'm on the subject of accuracy are there any other upgrades I can give my PSS to get the absolute most out of the rifle, how about a muzzlebrake or flash hider?(if yes can you give me a manufacturer/model).Lastly,since I have yet to receive my Bipod from Natchezss could anyone give me an idea of a good tactical sling as well as sling mounts to attach it to the bipod and rifle butt?I am thinking of the quick detach swivel mount but have no experience with them. Sorry for the long posts full of so many questions,I kind of have the attitude of "If it is worth doing,it is worth doing right the first time" so excuse my many questions.I guess the reason for this is this board is full of knowledgable people with much passion for their sport/hobby,who better to ask? Thanks again as always for any and all replies,Josey[This message has been edited by Josey1 (edited 10-25-2001).]

The Sight Lines Lens is a nice product, you are most welcome. Most gunbuilders feel the cryo process is a waste of time and money. It is a currently faddish, but fading gimmick.

Josey's going "Bin Laden hunting"! That's what I think.Josey,I really don't have experience with highly accurate rifles, but it has always amazed me how different manufactures/variations of ammo result in serious differences in accuracy in my "just average" firearms. If (or I should say "when") I get something (that Armalite AR-30 looks interesting, but I'm saving for a new truck first) for very high accuracy, I'll be buying samples of all the brands/variations of ammo I can find, just to see what shoots best.I really like muzzle brakes--but then I'm a big sissy when it comes to recoil. (And "man enough" to admit it!)Just my two cents (although not answering any of your specific questions).Joe

cryo treating a barrel involves reducing the barrel temp. to some ungodly freezing point. This removes any "weak" spots or less dense areas in the steel as the metal contracts under these extreme cold temps. I do have a lot of experience with Highly accurate rifles and know a benchrest record holder. The cryo process seems to make the barrel fouling harder to remove. most competitors I know are not doing it to their newer guns. I just finished a 280 Ackley with a 700 rem action, H&S precision stock, jewell trigger, Pacnor contour 875 27 1/2" stainless barrel etc etc etc and I didn't do it. As you can tell, I am not concerned about the cost and I still didn't do it.

This is identical my Remington 700 VSSF in .308, however I usually have it in my "Ultimate Varminter" stock. It just depends on how much you want to spend as to how "Trick" you go. This JP Enterprise "Recoil Eleminator" makes the .308 feel about like an AR-15 ... maybe a little less.

kimberkid, Beautiful piece. I take it you also like the satisfaction of tight groups at long distances and don't really concern yourself with petty details like cost. Thats not a factory barrel is it?

Yes! It is a factory barrel the VSSF stands for "Varmint Synthitic Stainless Fluted", besides the brake I've added a timmney trigger and had it Cryo'ed ... on a good day (with handloads) I can cover 10 rounds from 200 yds with a nickle. Thats not exactly in the .2's but it makes me smile
