I received an e-mail from a friend in central NE saying that she can't find any ammo for her rifle. I'm not familiar with a Savage. I thought I would try Cheaper Than Dirt for ammo but don't know exactly what to ask for. Any help is appreciated.

I collect early Savage rifles and have several in cal. 303 Savage. When I started deer hunting back in the 1940's the 303 Savage was still quite popular. The cartridge is marginally more powerful then the .30-30 Winchester and is, of course, chambered in the Model 1899 Savage rifle and carbine which is one of the finest lever actions ever made. One of the things that the old hunters liked about the 303 is the fact that it was available in a factory load with a 190gr. bullet rather then the 170gr. used in the .30-30. It had a reputation for deep penetration on game larger then deer,no doubt due to it's round nose bullet. Designed by Arthur Savage in 1895 the cartridge has been loseing popularity since the end of WWII. The last company makeing new factory ammo was Winchester and they may have drooped the cartridge by now which would explain why your friend can't find any. Those of us who do use the cartridge occasionally either horde the original brass that we have or make new brass from .30-30 Winchester cases. Most of us load the 180gr. round nose bullet of .308 diameter. If Winchester has indeed stoped limited production of the cartridge, then it becomes a total handloading proposition. Hope that this is of some help to you.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the Winchester on-line catalog and indeed, the 303 was not there. It looks like she is out of luck.

You might occasionally check the auctions of this website under "Collectible Ammo". I have seen the .303 Savage offered on more than one occasion.

Why not have your friend check in her area and see if there is a handloader who would be willing to load up a few boxes for her. Also check the gun shows in your area some of the dealers there may have a box or two for sale. If all else fails, take up handloading! It is a lot of fun and becomes very addictive. Besides then you can tailor the loads to exactly what you want.

Try Quality Cartridge www.owlnet.com/quality; I haven't used them yet but their offerings look good and the prices are not too bad. The 303 Savage ammo we have received from Old Western Scrounger has been far less than desirable.

I bought a 2 boxes Win Super X Silvertips at a Shop I deal with, and that was it.But then I find it at gun shows every now and then, enough that I can turn down some rough looking reloads and such.Believe it or not,my conversion book says to make it from 220 swift if need be..218

Using 220 swift cases wouldn't give you much of a rim but I suppose any port in a storm.Personally I'd stay away from ye olde scrounger until it comes down to must have.Maybe it is time to trade that old girl in on a newer rifle.Or better yet have the chamber recut to another cartridge.modoc

cbxjeff: I have a single box of mint R-P factory loads, 180gr SP, would sell for $35 + shipping. If interested, contact me directly.

Say, CBXjeff--this latter offer is a good one. Jump on it. Then she would also have 20 reloadable cases.
