It has a little "bumP" welded on that fits into a small groove. If it's new-ish, it will be really tight. Force it really hard (up) and it will come off. Maybe try banging the lever underneath with a hammer or mallet... hit it hard and it will come up.(you can't break it unless you run over it with a truck, believe me). In fact, I had one that fell off the back of my motorcycle and was hit by a SEMI and the only thing that was hurt was the wood stock! lol Good luck
