They are used to hold a string of cartridges in a line, and aid in quick loading of fixed or detatchable magazines. Generally on a detatchable magazine, a charger is placed on top of the mag and the loaded stripper clip is inserted in the charger. The rounds are then forced into the mag with the thumb. On certain rifles, such as the SKS, the loaded stripper clip is inserted into the firearm when the bolt is open, and the rounds are pushed down into the magazine.

Yep, the Springfield M1A can use them too. After the last round has been fired, the bolt automatically holds open, and there is a slot right on top of the rifle, you just stick the stripper clip, with 5 rounds in it, right into the slot and push down- fast reloading.Physically, they are just a piece of flat metal with a lip on either side that hold onto the rim of the cartridge.

I never gave them much thought till my son picked up a 10pack at a show. Now the hard to install 30rd. SKS mag just rest in a wall hagin' show piece. As for the SKS I really like em'.Just load up 20 or so ahead of time(while watching TV) and it makes things easier at the range. As for use on the Mosin Nagants I don't use them.I need the extra time between rounds to let the barrel(and my sholder) cool.Hey that reminds me I haven't shoot my SKS in a while, gotta go............Starride

I believe Mauser invented them and the Spanish gave us hell with them in the Spanish American War. As a result, we dumped the Krag and adopted the stripper clip system on the Springfield. The 10 shot stripper clip for the M-1 carbineclamps to the magazine and works real well.
