M1 Garand, what to look for when buying.

Picked up my P95 today and spied a M1 Garand on the rack for a reasonable price. Other than condition, what should one look for to tell if a rifle is worth buying. Not interested in a collector grade rifle , just a good shooter that is not junk.

Without gages or actually test firing the rifle with a few clips, it's not possible to tell if an M-1 Garand will function as a semi-auto. If it doesn't look too beat, if the bore looks acceptable and if you can get a guarantee the gun will cycle then take it. Without a guarantee and if it doesn't cycle, you could be looking at a new operating rod, gas cylinder, barrel or at worst all three.

Only consider an M1 with a USGI receiver; do not buy one with a "newly manufactured" receiver. You will usually be safe if you buy one with the government sales receipt; without one, it could be a parts gun or an import, both of which should be avoided. Check the FOR SALE ads at www.jouster.com. You might also consider buying from Scott Duff or Orion 7, both highly regarded dealers in M1's.Neal

I want to thank you guys for your help and advice. I was able to make an educated decision on short notice and purchased what turned out to be a very nice original M1 Garand in very good condition. It shoots well, also. Thanks again.

gunpaq....I know Scott Duff. I've seen his collection and the Garands he has for sale. I'd buy anything he has, sight unseen if necessary. Not suggesting you do that however. He's about 300 miles from you over in Export, PA. He might be at the gun show in Harrisburg on Dec. 8-9, don't know tho. That would be waycloser for you. You might try contacting the show sponsor. Mid Atlantic Arms Collectors at 570-679-2250 to see if they've got him listed to be there. I'm gonna' be there on the 8th. If you're there I'm pretty easy to spot. 6'6" 270 lbs. beard, accompanied by a beautiful 5'2" redhead.Mudge

Mudge: Thanks for the reply. I plan on being at the Harrisburg show also. I will be the guy walking around with the cowboy hat and cane. I just happened on this Garand that was brought that same day that I was at the gun shop to pick up my Ruger and could not pass it up for it's all original condition and price.
