Does anyone have an opinion on the SL8? Good or bad? Does anyone have any experience with the SL8?

I've heard they are not imported anymore. Is that true and does anyone know why?

I picked one up when they first came out; it was extremely accurate right out of the box. Using match ammo I had loaded for an AR it shot well under an inch. I never used the sights, just scoped it. The only thing I didn't like was a fairly long & heavy trigger, next time I shot it I sprayed it with a silicone lube (not WD-40) and it was much better. The old HK crowd doesn't seem overly anxious to accept them but accuracy was much higher than you could expect of any 91, 93, 94 types (SR-9, MSG-90, PSG-1 would be the exception rather than the rule).I haven't have any FTF or FTE, since the chamber isn't fluted you don't get the tale tale stains on the brass and it doesn't put the big ding in the case when it ejects them so reloading is a option unlike for its predecessor. Also unlike previous HK rifles it has a bolt stop to hold the bolt open after the last round fired, the spring-loaded charge handle can also be used as a forward assist and all controls are ambidextrous.... The only real drawback is that it does require a tool (which is supplied with the gun) for field stripping ... on the other hand it is a handy tool and not just for HK's.

Thanks for the reponse. I got to shoot one a SL8 a few weeks back. It is accurate (and loud) out of the box. I was shooting iron sights. Did you scope it with a HK product or other?Any mroe comments from anybody appreciated.

Darin,I put a Springfield 4-14X40, cammed for the 5.56 that I had bought for something else and sold, so it was just laying around and used it. To mount it I just took off the iron sights and saved them in the box and put on weaver style medium high rings, then adjusted the stock length & cheekrest to fit me ... If I had my 'druthers' I'd like a shorter scope rail for it, but I'm not loosing any sleep about it either. That is another big improvement I forgot to mention on the previous comment, that the SL-8 comes with several spacers for stock length & cheekrest height, unlike earlier models where you had to pay through the nose for HK accessories or settle for inadquate aftermarket "options".As for the the SL-8 being loud, I don't think its any louder than an AR ... Oh yeah, If you get one don't run out and buy a bunch of 10 round mags for it ($40-$50 ea), Todd at Special Weapons has gotten BTAF approval to produce a replacement mag well that will accept AR-15/M-16 mags.
