SKS & M-16

Hey, anybody ever hunt deer,bear or other big game with an SKS? I'm in the process of changing my Chinese SKS to a sporting rifle. Also, whats a good price range for a used M16 or AR15.And what's the availability of M16's.

Yeah man, that's a good rifle to hunt big game with for sure. You should get some soft point ammo though by Winchester or whatever and try that... make sure it feeds good first though, sometimes it hangs up. 7.62x39 is one hot round and I think it's underrated. That round will drop any animal on the North American continent for sure. Good luck

7.62x39 is ballistically very similar to the 30-30 Winchester. Do not use mil surplus or other ball ammo due to no expansion. Although the 30-30 has taken everything from mice to moose this round is mild and not reccomended for dangerous game. For deer (or anything else that won't bite back) you should be fine within the limited range of the round. Find a commercial hunting load that will feed reliably thru your rifle. If used like the venerable 30-30 you should have a good hunt.

IT IS A DECENT ROUND. HELL THE AFRICANS DIDNT KNOW THAT AT A BRITISH 303 IS NOT FOR BIG GAME. AND THEY WERE KILLING ELEPHANTS WITH IT...... IT IS ALL ABOUT BULLET PLACEMENT. A 22 WILL KILL DEER AND HOGS, IF YOU PUT IT IN THE RIGHT PLACE.

AS FOR THE MI6, ANYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS? I MEAN THERE ARE MILLIONS OF AR-15 OUT THERE, WHAT ABOUT THE SRRINGFIELD M16? DID THEY STOP MAKING THEM?

Everything is about bullet placement, this we use as a given. There are people who hunt with pistols, bowhunt and even some who drop out of trees with a knife (my childhood chum, Billy K, crazy sob)to take game, even dangerous game. But this isn't 99.9% of us.This round was developed as an intermediate round for a true assault rifle use, as such it isn't particularlly powerfull (when I typed this last night I knew someone would go to bullet placement). There are many different cartridges for many different uses, in some states .223 isn't legal for deer. Cartridge/bullet combos fall into different catagories for different uses and you should pick the appropriate one (no .458 Win for the moles then). The closest common comparable to the 7.62x39 is the 30-30, this serves as an excellent guidline for the use of this round. M-16 is the military designation for the full auto (later 3-round burst) version of the AR-15, as such it is a class three weapon requiring special licensing.

Id think there are better calibers for hunting than these but they will work fine within realistic ranges and proper shot placement. also I beleive some of the real M16s are going for less than ar15s but not to the public at large...........ever hear of AR15.com????[This message has been edited by rttc (edited 11-04-2001).]

The 7.62X39 is very close to the .30 carbine ballisticly (is that a word?). 123 gr. vs 110 and 2100 fps vs 1950 fps. Neither compares to the 30-30 (170 gr @ 2300 fps).If you think that the M1 carbine is a good hunting rifle then you will be over-joyed with SKS. Personally, I wouldn't use the round for anything larger than a coyote.

zizimike......Unless you think you are going to have to defend the neighborhood single handed, you ought to think twice about getting an M-16. It's a humongous hassle. The tax stamp is $200. I had a AR-15 converted to F/A back in '86 but only because the government told me I couldn't have one. They're a hoot to shoot but can get a bit expensive when you're really rockin' 'n rollin'. There aren't that many place that'll let you go full auto anyway.Mudgep.s. I'd be the last one to try to tell you "you don't NEED one". People who try to tell me what I "NEED" or "DON'T NEED" pi$$ me off!!!

Hey shootist, the info I've got (Hornady chart for the 30-30, Tula factory specs for the 7.62x39)show the 7.62 as 122gr@2396 fps and the 30-30 as 150gr@2390 fps. There were other numbers that ran closer. Thanks, Bill

The 7.62x39 could be a very good cartridge for hunting med. game. It is very similar to the 30 HERRETT of some years back. As a militory loading it is loaded up to 62000 psi, which is only equaled or surpased by 454 cascull and Werherby rifles.As to hunting with a sks, that club hurts my eyes just to look at it.Question: What is sammi loading of 7.62x39 factory ammo?dennisw

I have a Ruger .308 for my primary deer stand rifle for NE Missouri Whitetails but take along my SKS for when I am walking through the heavy brush area which borders my hunting area. I have taken three whitetail does with it the SKS. All were medium sized and hit properly. None ran more than 30 yards after being hit before dropping. I used Winchester 123 gr. soft point ammo. All were shot within 50 yards. I have also taken a coyote at @100 yards and several wild cats with it (ugly!). I love my SKS and would never part with it. I would also never take a shot with it much beyond 100 yards. Hope this helps.
