While in Egypt, I observed their standard weapon was the AK-47 in 5.56 Nato caliber. I was informed that it was a Maadi and was built in Egypt. Has anyone here seen one of these?

Interesting info! 7.62 x 39, semi-auto Maadi's are not uncommon. Believe some of the first were imported back in the 80's by the outfit that imported Steyr rifles.

Never heard of any in 223 though. Not a biggie as the Chinese have been making 223 Cal. A K variants for years.

I owned a Maadi AK in 7.62x39 and the machine work on that rifle was pitiful. It looked like it was made with a chisel.

I believe they had prisoners in Egypt make those rifles, correct?

I have an imported Maadi. There is two types of Maadis. One that was imported prior to the 89 ban, and one that was imported as pieces and assembled on a a us receiver. The later is not as good a quality.

check out this site, lots of good info.
