Hi I am bidding on a S&W 9mm pistol. I am looking at the ammo for this gun and it hits me what kind of volosity do these rounds have? All I see is not 230 grain. What kind of knock down power do they have verses the old millitary 45 cal. semi-auto side arm? What is the best kind of ammo for practice and also for shooting in self defense?[?]

So if you shoot the 9mm would you want something that opened up a bit more to transfer the phyical innersha into the object you shot? I understand a larger cal moves slower with more forse due to weight.I am guessing that a 9mm is not really such a good thing, mabey just a nice target shooting gun?

I am looking into getting a good 9mm for personal defense and sport shooting. I am looking at the 24/7-9BP-17 by Taurus. Mostly I am looking into getting something that is durable and reliable. I am going to be looking into Glock and Kimbers. I dont have a whole lot to spend on this handgun so please lets keep the price under 500.00 . Thank you in advance!

inertia and force? placement works with a 22 and there's always the double tap option. research more stats and get to the range to bone up.

9mm works just fine for self defense. Just use any good name brand hollow point in the 115 or 124 grain range.

    Corbon 9mm ammo gives you:

    125gr JHP 1250fps 434ftlbs 4.0" barrel

Corbon 357 magnum ammo gives you:

    125gr JHP 1400fps 544ftlbs 4.0" barrel
(but with less shots and more recoil)

Whatever you are shooting will not notice the difference.

9mm has killed more people than 45acp has.

The trick is to use GOOD JHP ammo.

What you are saying is a PROVEN fact.
In actual shootings of human targets and testing have shown the thrash hold for achieving the maximum ability for 'stopping' a human target with a 125-130 gr .355-.357 expanding bullet is 1200 fps. Thus the effect on the target between 1200 and 1450 fps is not negligible.
For those who don't understand what 'stopping' some one entails let me explain.
    1. What stops a person, short of a direct central nervous system hit, is oxygen deprivation in the brain.
    2. What causes oxygen deprivation to the brain is loss of circulation of oxygen rich blood to the brain.
    3. What causes the loss of circulation is massive trauma to the circulatory system. The greater the trauma the faster the stop.
    4. The major components of the circulatory system are found deep inside the body, to protect them from trauma.
    5. To cause the amount of trauma necessary for a rapid stop a projectile MUST cause a wide and deep permanent wound channel, thus allowing the blood pressure to drop quickly (bleed out).
The myth of 'knock down power' still seams to be wide spread by the movie industry but is just that, a myth.
If you use the BEST self defense ammo (an expanding bullet which maintains most of it's weight on impact with a min velocity of 1000 fps) in the 9mm, 357 Sig, 40 S&W, and 45 acp and you place the projectile in the upper torso, THEY ARE ALL BASICLY EQUAL!!![:)]
The 357 Mag 125 gr JHP is still better than any of the above, but only slightly.

The 9mm luger is the most popular military and police pistol caliber on the planet.

It didn't get that way because it "sucks" or can't do the job it needs to do.

I have yet to meet the person willing to get shot by one!

People can (will. . and do) argue all day about how good the 9mm is versus the other calibers like .40 and .45ACP, but with modern loadings this is NOT a poor round.

As mentioned it will give you 80% of the ballistics of a .357 magnum in a gun with 2.5x the capacity (plus cheaper to practice with, less recoil, and faster followup shots).

Just use a good "personal protection" type round, and practice with it, and it will do what you need it to do.
