Marlin 336CS

I have a Marlin 336CS and the action is quite stiff. You have to keep it pinned hard to your shoulder when cycling it. I have handled and shot a Cowboy Action Marlin in .44 Mag and it was slick as could be, and had been worked on to make it so. If I cock the hammer first, it works more freely, as expected, so I know that the bolt's pushing the hammer back is adding to the effort required. The loading gate is also tough to use. What can I do, other than the obligatory cleaning and oiling, to make this gun's action slicker? Actually I bought it used, and I don't think it's been used much yet.

This is for the 1894, but much of the info will apply to the 336 also.
