Stock crack by recoil lug?

I found an old Mauser at the gun-show last weekend that I almost bought. I passed because there was a crack in the stock by the recoil lug. This decission has nagged me ever since. I was wondering if there was any real issue that should have concerened me or was I just over cautious?
