How many frame sizes did Winchester make in the "Red Letter" period? I am wondering if a 28 gauge barrel and fore arm fits on a 20 gauge frame.

While I do not know if the frames are the same size for a 20 & 28 gauge Model 37, they are the same size for both gauges for a Model 12.

According to the Encyclopedia of Modern Firearms, Winchester parts list shows 3 frame sizes..

    #6137- 12ga & 16ga

    #6237- 20ga & 28ga

    #6337- .410 bore

And yes, Bert.. I did sing E-N-C-Y-C-L-O-P-E-D-I-A , as I typed it..

Well, I actually had the privilege of holding two Winchester Model 37's last evening...one in 410 bore, and one in 20 gauge They both looked to have the same frame size. Then when I used the calipers to look at them, the 410 bore is slightly smaller, but not much.
