I have an AK that has been painted. I would like to strip it down and refinish. The weapon shoots perfectly. It is pre ban and I believe it is a 74.. Am I right in assuming it is an ak74 because it is a 5.56?/.223 x 39? How would I determine otherwise? It has steel mags..
Any info would be appreciated.

The early import Chinese AK's in 223/5.56 X 45, weren't considered to be AK 74's.
In the last 5/10 years everybody and their brother have been making AK variants in this country. No telling what you have, if your talking about one of those. That's why we need the quality photos.
EDIT #1, Your photo(s) aren't visible.
This is the error message I got when I clicked on your link.
"ImageShack was unable to render this page correctly."
Thank you Mobuck. as you can see now, it is in 5.56
Not Mobuck, but your picture indicates 5.56 X 45 which is .223 Remington or 5.56 NATO.
Good luck. [:)]
The confusing thing is that many hobbyists over the years, using aftermarket parts, have built them into cosmetic replicas of the AK 74.
Here is a photo off the net showing the receiver and markings of a authentic Soviet AK 74. Compare them to yours.
