I've done it primarily as a hobby I always wanted to learn and as a challenge to myself and became quite good at it. Also, learned it helps to use an electric checkering tool with the carbide cutting wheels - no matter how grainy or hard the wood you could always cut your laid out checkering pattern. Also, learned how to cover up repaired cracked stocks with checkering patterns and make checkered butt plates but I it is no longer a challenge so I have set my checkering aside for now. Sometimes I've seen checkering advertised here on GB and ebay.

I've had Sherry Abraham do a couple of stocks. While she may Seem pricey, you certainly get what you paid for.

I've spoke with Sherry Abraham in the past and she is a highly rated checkerer with lots of experience - you couldn't go wrong with her.

I have done some checkering on small metal stuff and it was 'fun'. Touching up light stuff on wood is ok - laying out and doing a real nice complex pattern is well worth paying a pro.

Wow her BatMan job is awesome!

Larry at Midway USA has a vid.
