Short rifle or carbine?

On another post Bert answered some questions on an 1892 20" barreled short rifle. I believe Winchester made short rifles with barrels down to 14". So what is the difference between a 20' short rifle and a 20' carbine? Shorter stock on the rifle? Saddle ring only on the carbine? In most guns a carbine is simply a rifle with a short barrel.

    Kannoneer,

There are several distinct differences between a 20 inch short barreled sporting rifle and a saddle ring carbine with a standard 20 inch barrel.
    1. The standard butt stock design is different.
    2. The standard butt plate design is different.
    3. The fore end design is different.
    4. There are different forward magazine retaining rings/barrel bands for the small and large caliber carbines but only one style of retaining ring on sporting rifles.
    5. 20 inch sporting rifles may have round, octagon, or half round half octagon shaped barrels. Carbines ONLY have round barrels.
    6. There is the obvious standard ring on the left side of the carbines. Though this could be omitted and ALSO the ring could be ordered on a sporting rifle.
    7. Carbine front sights were integral to the barrel. Whereas sporting rifle front sight were fitted into a dovetail cut into the barrel.

    That should cover it
