Is there a site to go to on Lyman sights, older ones. I know my model 64 had a lyman 56 option but I see a 56, 56a, 56b and really have not idea what the difference is.

I believe that it was the No. 56. I will need to dig through my references to be absolutely sure though. If your Model 64 is a post war gun, it could have been fitted with a Lyman No. 66A versus a No. 56.

Bert H it seems to me I remember reading the 66a came out in 1955. I have been seeing some crazy prices on lyman sights and the 66a is a lot cheaper, but I want to make sure I have the correct sight before i buy

I think I have some lyman reloading manuals from the 1950's I will see if I can find listing on sights . I know I have American Rifleman's from late 1920's to current . but they are packed away. I will see if I can find 1952 and 1953 to see if I can find Layman AD but it may be a week before I can GET TO IT

FWIW: My 1953 Stoeger Shooter's Bible contains a "Chart of Lyman Sights" and lists the 56A as the one for the Win. 64. Also, that 1953 issue does not include the 66 sight. The 1964 issue does list the 66 sight and shows the 66A as the one for the Win. 64. The listing in the 1953 issue for the Win. 64 includes the sentence, "Receiver drilled and tapped for Lyman 56 and other receiver sights."

The Lyman 56 sight was a $7 option on the Win. 71 in 1953, making the price $107.30.

The 1953 price for the 56 sight was $8 and the Win 64 was $91.60.

    Hope this helps.

EDIT: Since the 1954 Stoegers catalog would have been printed in 1953, I suppose it's possible that the Lyman 66 sight might have been available as early as 1953. The 1954 Stoegers does not list the 56 sight. There is also the Redfield #70EH from that era. The H stands for coin slotted hunter knobs which I would think you'd want on a hunting rifle. The coin slotted knobs on the Lyman 66 sight were called "Stayset".

The Lyman No. 66 was available in 1954, and first listed in the 1955 catalog.

The No. 56A is the correct sight for a 1953 vintage Model 64... if that is the actual year yours was manufactured. What is the serial number on your Model 64?

Thanks Ambrose and Bert for you help. Given you guys information I believe the 56 is the right sight for my 1953 model 64. I found a NIB 56a and gave $ 250 for it. I can't make out the price on the box but it looks like $ 8.50. I made a offer of $ 10.00, guy has to make a profit, but got turned down. At the price these things are bringing I would have bought it anyway. My 64 has a lot of blue on the receiver so the sight should not look out of place.

Bert you already checked out the serial for me, it is a 53. I haven't taken the fore arm off yet to get you the photo of the year number on the barrel, but I will do that.
