Winchester Model 12 shell length update

So I took my model 12 16ga 1926 model to the local gunshop and he said it seemed like the chamber had already been modified to 2 3/4" because there was no groove in the barrel, only a taper. He said he would see no problem shooting the gun with modern 2 3/4" shells.

I took a piece of cardboard and cut it down the same width as the diameter of a shell, opened the ejection port and stuck it in the barrel until it stopped. Then marked the cardboard where the end of the shell would be when loaded. This measured just about a 1/16" under 2 3/4".

If your gun will fire an eject a 2-3/4" shell without any sticky or stuck shells, or hang-ups coming out of the ejection port, then it most likely was opened up by someone... but not by Winchester.
