Never had a problem with them, but I suggest you talk to Conotrol. They will be happy to give all the help they can, and they have seen and solved more problems with their rings than anyone.

I have gone to Dave Talley rings. Not as clean looking, but absolutely bomb proof and easy to mount.

get in touch with Brownells .com as I believe they used to sell Conetrol parts.

These are great mounts but are precisely cut. If you by chance mixed up the caps and rings there may be a chance that one would fit but not the other. The caps are matched to individual rings. Try putting reversing the caps.

It has been a long time since I have mounted any Conetrols, so my memory may be a little rusty on the subject. You say you are having trouble keeping the ring together? Did you remember that the cap and the ring are marked and that the marks must be lined up? Evidently the rings you have do not have the little screws that hold the bottom together. Try assembling the ring halves and the top cap and squeezing the bottom posts together with your fingers tight enough to hold the cap on. Might try some padded pliers, if finger pressure is not enough. As I recall, they could be aggravating, and sometimes took several tries. Good Luck, I might have some old instructions if I can remember where they are. If you need further help, I'll look. E-mail me at jmothes@pld.com.
