scope on a big bore pistol

I am going to buy a Magum Research BFR in 45/70 I was wondering if I should put a scope on it and if so which mount and scope should I get

Welcome aboard, Bluegoose,
With that caliber, if you scope it, you will want to put a good high quality scope and rings on it. There are a lot of people on here that can advise you better than I, and who have more experience with scoped handguns. I shoot without a scope.

Get yourself a Bushnell Holosight!! I prefer the first generation Holosights but will use the second generation!! The target aquisition is superioior to a scope. If you can see the target you can put the dot on it. With a scope you have to look for the target and then put the crosshair on the target. I shoot xp-100 Remingtons and have 2 with holosights and the latest one is an old model in 223 with a Burris 3x9LER scope. The 223 is very accurate. .600 groups at 100 yards. My 13 yr old daughter was with me when I attemped to kill the first groundhog with this pistol. She kept saying, "Shoot him Daddy, he's going to go in his hole." I said, "Sarah, I can't find him in the scope!" She was used to me popping them very quickly with the holosight. If you can see the target you can put the dot on him! The longest, measured, and witnessed shot I have with the 7BR and a holosight is 376YARDS. I will never climb tree stand carrying a rifle and scope again!! Give me the pistol and the holosight and I'll own that piece of meat. GHD

i agree with the grounhog. too hard to find target esecialy in low light. put a holo-sight on it you will be much happier. carl

GD is right i have a TC 45/70 super 16 with muzzle tammer with a first generation holo i love it, also have a 44 mag tc with holo i shoot real good groups at 100 yards with the 45/70 you'll never regret it

I've had a mag. research .444 marlin. My advice is that whatever you put on it, be darn careful of your eye! the recoil is rather stiff. scopes have a nasty way of jumping ugly with an eye that wanders too close when the pistol is being fired!

Rob Greenes' post mentions something we fans of holosights forgot. Eye relief is not important with a holosight as it will work with eye releif of 1 inch to 10 ft!! If you can see the target and see the dot, pull the trigger!!! GHD

I use TSOB mounts/rings on my FA guns. It's a very secure mounting system. I don't know if it would work with one of those electronic sights - I don't use them.

You said you preferred first generation, no one else has mentioned various generations. Can you please specify the differences, and is first generation still available? I did buy a BFR and want whats best for it.

The first generation is about 1.4 inches longer than the second generation. It also secures to the mount base with 2 contact points instead of 1. On my xp's it sits a little lower than the second generation. It's not much difference in height but my xp's won't fit my holster with the second generation. I bought a brand new in the box first generation with standard reticle off of GB in March. Every now and then you find them listed. Check here and the other on-line auction sights. I've seen them on e-bay too but never bought one there. Hope this helps. GHD
