Comparing & Contrasting Romainian AK & 308 CETME

I am stuck. I need to decide wether I want a AK or a 308 CETME. Both would be in new condition, with the AK being around $330 and the CETME around $600. The purpose: Fun target shooting, possible under 175 yds deer hunting, to get one before HR 1022. Both rifles appeal to me. Would some people please compare accuracy, bang-for-your-buck, ect. to help me decide? Thanks.

Unless you have you heart dead set on the AK look at an SKS. They run about under 200, better accuracy, and are just as rugged and reliable as the AK. As for the CETME, I don't know this rifle and can't help you.

    grcwt55,

Are you looking at the 7.62 NATO/308 version of the AK? Either one the CTME, which is an HK knock off, or the AK then would be good, but there are more things available for the CTME. I also have not heard all that much about the AK's other than the VEPR, which is a quality version, and they are bound to be as, or more pricey than the CTME. I actuall seen one with a very nice stippled walnut stock, and it looked to be very sound.

For $330 I would imagine you're looking at a WASR. In that case I would vote for the CETME. If you can find a SAR-1 AK I would go with that since it was made to take high-cap mags.
Also keep in mind the price of ammo. 308 is alot more expensive than 7.62 ammo.

You will always be able to find an AK, Cetme's not so much. I have both, and like the Cetme more. .308 is the better round IMO. One of my criteria is possible future collectibility, unless the AK is Russian, or an Arsenal, from Bulgaria, It is the Cetme again.

Buy the Cetme. HK is an expensive copy of it.

When Germany wanted a 308 Nato they started talking to the French. The French were so rude that Germany all but kicked the FN represenitive out of Germany. One story says the Germans actually escorted the rep. to the airport and put him on a plane. Germany then went to Spain and bought the rights to produce the Cetme and that's why HK is a Cetme knock off.

    Further details:
The AK I was considering was a 7.62x39 WASR10 and the CETME is 308.

The CETMEs sold with US receivers needed a little work to make them shootable when they first came out. The later ones were supposed to be better. If you find one that feeds well, they are a lot of fun and use a more powerful cartridge than the AK. Remember to wear hearing protection, that muzzle brake is loud.

Split the difference - Siaga in 308. AK design with the 308 cartridge.

Now if you had said FAL (even a Century) vs. hte AK, I'd vote for the FAL.

I would not spend 600 bucks on any sort of AK variant. WHY? I have the romanian WASR10 looks great and works great. And as for the SKS, dont buy the SKS and not the AK. I did that, and eventually I bought the AK anyway.
