I have owned this gun for over 40yrs and just recently got it out and started looking it over. I am curious with a 4 digit serial #, could it be an original. It does have the silver back-strap and trigger guard. All parts have the same serial #. It is a .36 caliber 6 shot. Hope the pictures help.

It'a a real beauty. But I believe it's whats called a second generation, ("C" series), replica. They were assembled in New Jersey, (circa 1971-78), from Italian and U.S. parts. Than shipped to Colt for inspection and distribution.

    Looks like that.
The SN is higher than Flayderman gives for a square back trigger guard original.
Looks like hot blue on the barrel, too.
I am amazed there is no identifying mark.

The original 1st Generation Square Back Navy
ended at approximately serial number 4000. When
Colt resumed production with the 2nd Generation
Square Back in 1971 they began with sn 4201.

So any Square Back Navy with a sn of 4201 or higher is a
    2nd (or 3rd) Generation.

Definitely a 2nd Generation Colt, manufactured in 1973. You can get a Colt factory letter on it if you so desire.
