Minimum Barrel Length

A post in Gen Disc got me wondering, is the 18" minimum bbl length measured from the breech or the end of the chamber ? I have a .410 cut down to 21" overall, figuring 3" chamber and 18" bbl. Is this correct or could I lop off another 3" (2 1/2 to be safe) ?

Spec is from the face of the "closed breach". Add 1/2 inch for padding (IE: cop with a short ruler)

SP & Tailgunner are both correct. Also, 26 inches total length of
the weapon. As Tailgunner said, "Add 1/2 inch for padding (IE: cop with a short ruler)"

That is why the shortest barrel Mossberg sells is 18.5" and so labeled.

Remington sells a barrel they call 18" but if you measure it, it will go 18.5".

The cleaning rod down the bore to the closed breech face method of measuring the barrel length is the method prescribed by the BATF.

I want to add to this question. I have a barrel with a (vented)poly-choke. Does this count toward total length or do I count the length when the choke is removed?

The reason for length thing is to eliminate the concealed carry of "sawed off" weapons.
IMHO If it's removable, don't count it. If it perminent (soldered, welded, etc.) include it.
You will find, that the barrel was cut back before the Poly-choke was installed (to remove the origional choking).
