I bought a new slug gun this year its a Browning BPS 12ga with a 24 inch Hastings rifled barrel on it and I am trying to sight in with Federal ammo loaded with Barns Tipped Expanders 2 3/4in and I am having some real odd pattering issues that might be just me but thought I'd get some opinions on these bullets. The biggest ? I had was I noticed some of the Sabot jackets were coming appart and some are intact. Dose this matter, will it affect the flight? And also after 5 boxes of sighting in and some seemingly crazy flyers and no real pattern, the last 5 shots were in about a 3 inch group at 100yds in the bullseye is that enough to say the gun is shooting them fine and I'm doing something or are these symtoms typical of a barrel that dosn't like your bullet of choice? If it were a bullet/ barrel problem wouldn't almost every round be in a different spot with no pattern ever?

3 inch group at 100 yards would In MY Opinion be excellent. what kind of sights/scope are you using.

Well shot other sabots and find out. If you get better results use the other ones. 5 shots with rifle sights a 3in group is fine. Adequate for deer, you might do better with a scope and different ammo choice.

Should get you by this year.

Next year buy all the differnt types and shot about ten of em.

I have a Leupold 3x9x40 shotgun scope on it. I hate to sound cheap but its getting expensive at 13.00$ a box. I have 2 boxes left and and planned on shooting those up and if they were not consistant trying a differt kind. Possibly Winchester partition golds. I was more trying to get answers about the jackets coming appart and if my previous issues sounded like something I was doing or bullets not agreeing with my setup. My 1st patters were half in the bulseye and half all over, just the last 5 were all in.

Should the Sabot caseing be coming appart some times does that even matter?

I wouldn't worry about it opening more or less. So long as the bullet isn't still attached. So they are fine.

Buck hammers by remington are cheaper and if they shoot good you could use those. Hastings makes a sabot too might work well. You are going to pay more for any copper jacket sabots. Federal makes lead solids they are cheaper than the barnes sabots. Check out an ammo website for prices and differnt options.

I am not sure about barz's statement because the bullet doesn't contact the rifling in a shotgun just the plastic wads.

I have a remington 870 12 fully rifled barrel with a leupold 3-9x40 shotgun/muzzle loader rated scope on it. I tried a couple different sabots and found, for my set up ,it likes the rem 2 3/4 buckhammer.
When I first got my gun set up, on remingtons website they themself said with thier gun, thier barrel, thier slugs if I got 5-6 inch groups at 100 yds. to consider that good. I guess I got lucky getting a goods gun, barrel, and ammo as I'm grouping 2-3 inches at 100yds. So your 3" grouping, as others said, I would call that good.
Also agree with, comes spring try some other brands of ammo if you want, but if you're going to hunt yet this season, leave it alone and go get 'em.
I too have had some rounds that the sabot did not seperate from the slug. This has not caused a accuracy problem for me as the last one that didn't seperate I found in my dead deer at 120 yds. (shot her on a angle, in the rib cage.Slug hit vitals and stopped against the opposite side rear leg bone)[;)][;)][:)][:)]
Good luck. Hope this info helps.

I thought the Remington loads would work well in my 870 & was wrong. Win Supremes gave the best accuracy out 5 brands tested. Same thing when I switched to an 1100. The Supremes gave the best accuracy. Bought a used NEF Ultra. This gun prefered Lightfields. Due to the increased prices, I found the Hornady SSTs give me good accuracy in the 1100 and are much flatter shooting. First shots were about 14" high since it was still sighted in for the much heavier and slower Win Supremes. The SSTs are 2000 FPS and I think the Supremes are something around 1500FPS. Recommend you keep experimenting but 3" at 100 is very good.

Anyone know how the expansion is with the SSTs?

I had same problem once with remington copper solids out of an Ithaca 12ga. Good group, then flyer way off. I finally decided something was wrong with my scope or mounts, gave up and went home. Sometime later I was looking at the ammo I had left and noticed 2 rounds that looked funny. Both only had 3 tabs, instead of 4, on the sabots. It wasn't my gun or scope it was the slugs. I still need to contact remington r/t to this (I've been lazy and haven't done it yet).

I've used the copper solids for years with really good results, just got a hold of a bad run it seems. I do inspect each and every round now before shooting them.

I hunt in Northern Illinois where you must use slugs. In the 30+ years I've used slugs I've learned every gun shoots every brand of slugs differently.
I currently use an Ithaca 20 gauge Deerslayer with a fully rifled barrel. Hornady SST's perform the best.
You have to spend a little more money on 2-3 more brands of slugs and try them out. My Ithaca is a tack driver at 100-150 yards with the Hornady's.
I also clean the barrel after every 4-5 shots while sighting it in.
    Good luck!
