I don't find a Model 50 in any of my lists, but I'm sure you know what you've got. This is a strange situation, because, yes--FN actions are usually considered a very desirable basis on which to build a custom sporter. The action alone (receiver, bolt, trigger guard, floorplate, trigger, sear)is probably worth $250, assuming excellent condition. On the other hand, most firearms stamped "J.C. Higgins" are perceived by the shooting public (rightly or wrongly) as utilitarian catalog guns, valued only as shooters. Probably your rifle, in excellent condition (not counting extras such as scope, etc.) is worth about $250. So, there wouldn't be much practical point in breaking it down for the action.

Same model but in 30-06 at local gun store for $245 with older Weaver variable scope. Neighbor has one in .270 - it is a nice shooting rifle and very accurate - he uses it alot for deer and groundhogs since new in the 50's.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.
