i have been bitten twice by my 340 and now by my 30-378 ! I want a high power variable...I am reading that burris will give you 3.5-4 inches on either the 4-16 signature or the black diamond...are there others out there that match it or are even better in something that will exceed 10x on the high end ?

Without going to a pistol/scout scope, the Burris Sig and the Leupold VXII's-III's have very nice eye relief around 4".

My 4x16 Sig has right at 4", the last 4x12 VXII I had was a tad over 4". Both should be plenty. I prefer Burris over Leupold, but that's just me.

    Suggestion
Rather than putting a band aid (more eye relief) on your problem, try working on your real problem IE: learn how to handle the rifle properly.

3" is plenty of eye relief, for both of those rifles, IF you hold them properly.

well, i think old habits are hard to break ! at 48 years old, over 20,000 rounds through a couple hundred of different guns kind of have me in a rut, so i'll just go for the extra eye relief...thanks for the sugestion though !

Hello Scott another thing I would try is if you have long arms and tend to get close to the eye piece of your scopes you might want to experiment with a longer/thicker recoil pad maybe a lace on pad just to see if this will help you with your problem. Also offset rings my allow you to move the scope you have forward on the action.

I presume your 340 is a Weatherby, I have the same experience with mine even though it is braked. The Leupold Rifleman series has alot of eye relief as does some of the Nikons. I have Leupold 2 to 7X and a Nikon on on Ruger #1s in 375 H & H and 458 Win Mag, they've never come close to hitting me. I just put a Leupold 2 to 7X shotgun scope on my 416 Rigby and that has about 5" of eye relief. Crosshairs are a bit thick, but the gun's not being used for target work.

    scott/tailgunner1954,

It is not a matter of handling the firearm properly at all. It is a matter of having the scope mounted properly, and no one, but no one likes scope eye. Mount the scope as low as possible, and get the comb height right so your head rides on the stock during the recoil cycle. You do not want your head up off the stock, and the recoil driving the rifle back. Add padding to the comb if needed. With all that said, lots of eye relief is still comforting.

    scott,

You never did say what brand of scope you were using. I prefer Burris, Nikon, Sightron, and for your application, I think Nightforce would be good.

Scott you are a gentleman. Burris Signature Select and Leupold Vari-X III have about the best I relief I have seen. My IOR Valdada is decent as well, but is not a variable.
