If you mean one of the horseshoe shaped vinyl buffers, and you have a standard pistol, and are familiar with the disassembly procedure, you remove the recoil spring from the spring guide and slide the buffer over the guide rod so that it is against the head of the guide which is shaped the same and orient it to match. Replace spring on rod and reassemble pistol. It doesn't matter which side of the buffer is forward.

I installed one of these recoil buffers on a cronie of mines colt 1911 and it had ejecting problems. Looked like to me the aprox. 1/8 thick vinyl buffer prevented the slide form traveling back the thickness of the buffer, I Believe the shorter travel of the slide rearward caused the ejecting problems. Somehow there must be a way to fix that problem, Such as a longer ejector ???
Maybe a weaker recoil spring would have helped .
We never tried to fix the problem, We just took the buffer back out and left it in stock form.

thanks for the reply that is how i installed my buffer but after about 50 shots it was mangled so i guess I need a stronger recoil spring. I'm shootiing a lee 230 grain cast bullet with 5 gr. of unique

Well, then--it would seem that your buffer is doing it's job; and yes, it looks like a new recoil spring would be the place to start. There's nothing wrong with your load. I routinely shoot 225 gr. cast lead roundnose over 6.5 gr. Unique. Gold cups come with softer recoil springs as it is anticipated that they will shoot many, many target loads. Fortunately springs and buffers are relatively inexpensive. Try an 18 lb. spring and a new buffer.

The mangling of the recoil buffer is completely normal- this is why they sell them in packs of three or six. They just don't last very long!
