Ed's Red Bore Cleaner

Just a quick note on Ed's Red, and an addition to the closed post from Xracer on 08/12 about solvent recipies. I made a batch of this about 4 years ago for my agency in an attempt to cut costs. Stuff works great, although it has a bit of a strong smell. I was kind of hoping for a Hoppes odor. Anyway, one of the tests I did was to cut a small piece of a Glock frame off and soak it in the mixture to see if it would harm it. Xracers post included concerns about it hurting plastics. It never changed or softened the Glock piece 4 years ago, and it is still in the small jar with no problems-just checked it. And yes, my gun bench is a mess but I know where everything is.

Thanks GHS, all I need is the acetone to make my first batch. I was wondering if laquer thinner is the same as paint thinner, it is , isn't it? The Wife said that CVS has nail polish remover , and all that is is acetone, but its a little perfumey.

If you mix up a batch of Ed's Red, and it smells like lavender, you have to move to San Francisco.

    Hello "locdoc1"

I stopped by Ace Hardward store today on lunch break to look at the materials in the "paint" section of the store.

They had "SunnySide" brand. The mineral spirits (paint thinner) was $1.99 a quart, K1 kerosene was $2.99 a quart, and acetone was $3.99 a quart. The only thing left was a quart of automatic transmission fluid. Should make up a gallon. Stored in 4 quart "Mason" jars, it should last you many-many-many years.

"GHS" has given us first hand experience that 4 years of immersion in "Ed's Red" won't bother a Glock, which means that I won't be shy about using it on one in the future.

    Best regards
