I have a colt Ar15 Hbar sporter serial number sp 2440xx. I called Colt and asked what info they could tell me about it. The only thing they could say was it was manufactured in 1984. It was originally purchased by my brother new. He's now passed, but he had told me that when he originally purchased it could have been converted, legally with the right paper work, to a select or burst fire, Drop in sear. Any validity or now just family lore? Would a class III dealer be interested? If not B/S, any ideas on cost per year for the average guy to have a full or burst fire?

I'm looking for one with no sear block. To be honest, I've only ever picked up a couple so wouldn't know where to even look for a sear block without one of each at hand.

Can the sear block be removed legally with the ban dead?

What serial number range would insure that I was getting what I'm looking for?

    TIA

Looking for opinions on an AR. What I would like is a 16" barrel,223/5.56 with removable carry handle and ability to mount a scope or red dot sight. I really do not like the adjustable stocks so it should have the plain fixed type. Also, want recommendations for the action-- piston type or? This rifle would be fired sparingly. Probably 200 or 300 rounds per year. Reliability and economy are important to me.I do not want to build my own. Thanks for any and all ideas.

Oh No, here we go! I think that depends more on the retailer instead of manufacturer when it comes to prices! 4 years ago I bought a new 16" Bushmaster at my local shop for under $800. The same rifle I had priced at almost a dozen other shops and none of them were under a $1000. It usually depends on how much the retailer wants to make. That is why Bushmaster, DPMS, Stag Arms, Etc. MSRP's are so high so they mask the profit the retailer actually makes. I have never purchased a new rifle anywhere near what the MSRP is, Never!

I recommend building one! You can build one or even assemble one with different components to the way you want it cheaper than you can buy one. Can't beat a personally customized rifle cheaper than one you will have to put more money in to get it the exact way you want it.

My "PlayToy" is a frankinstein. A Superior Arms S-15 AR15 .223/5.56 Lower Receiver, Armalite upper receiver, A.R.M.S. #50 M-CV S.I.R. System handgaurds,Six Position Telescoping Stock Assembly,DPMS 16" 1x9" Twist, AP4 Contour, and more. All for less than what you can buy a loaded Bushmaster or DPMS rifle for.

    A reply to asquires question!
RRA is a quality made piece just like bushmaster, but at a cheaper price. This is what you call Value(Price compared to overall quality). And RRA rifles are definately high on the Value list!

I recommend building it on a complete lower from R Guns and an upper from J&T, Model 1, or Del Tron.

For a complete gun Aramlite, Stag, DPMS, Bushmaster, S&W, Doublestar, and others make a good gun.

Olympic Arms is ok, but I have seen more complaints about them.

DO NOT get anything with Hesse, Vulcan, or Blackthorne on it. They are cheap, wear quickly, or just refuse to work.

as others have said built one, it wont necessarily be better or worse. but more cost effective if you plan on buying a loaded AR from any of the big name Manuf.

I am RRA all the way

I recommend buying a new, in the box, rifle for your first AR. Taking it apart & cleaning it, you will get a "feel" for all the parts & how they work together. Besides, you will get a factory warranty; if you have any problem with a rifle you built, you'll have to pay someone else to fix it. And, the resale value of a factory rifle will always be higher.

For most of us, the RRA will be the best value.

what would be the a good twist for all around shooting mainly target shooting?

Most FMJ casual target ammo bought will be in the 55 or 62 grain weights. So usually a 1 in 9 twist is the ideal for shooting both.
