i recently upgraded from an rcbs single stage press to a dillon progressive. i absolutely love the progressive. i cant' see any more need for the single stage and the owner of the local range said he wants it. he's willing to offer some free shooting time in exchange. (haven't worked out any details yet tho) question is: should i go ahead and trade off the single stage or should i hold on to it? please give opinions and why. thanks

Dunno. I still use my single stage to reload small lots of riffle (20-40). How much range time is he offering?

Kinda depends upon which (and how many) calibers you're loading for but I'd hang on to it until I was absolutely certain I had no further use for it. I've currently got (2) Dillons (a Square Deal B set up for .45ACP and an RL550B that I use for .357s and .44s) plus a couple of single-stages (a heavy-duty O-frame for case forming and full-length sizing of long bottleneck cases and a C-Frame for neck-sizing, seating, and taper-crimp operations) All are used regularly but, then too, I load for (6) handgun and (8) rifle calibers...(9) rifle, if you count the couple hundred of rounds a year I run off for a buddy's 11mm Danish Rolling Block.

    Keep it.

Here is my take on that trade...he is giving up nothing...no value from him for something of value from you. Cash or hardware talks.

He can probably buy a new one and with his discount, probably only pay $60-75.

Are you looking to make money? If so, until an amount of range time is set, the question is academic. Once that's settled, what would it cost if you had to pay for it? Will that be more or less than what you could get for selling/trading the press?

I would keep it. It doesn't eat or take up much space.

Another alternative is to just donate it to the range or other deserving entity.

I have a Dillon 550B and a RCBS JR press. I use the single stage for sizing rifle brass quite often and I load a few odd ball calibers on it that are rarely shot so I don't want to by a new caliber conversion for the Dillon. I would keep it.

I have a 550 and a square deal (square deal for .38/.357 and 550 for 45acp/45ar). I reload a lot of rifle ammo but it is always loaded on either my RCBS Rockchucker, old C-H "C" style press, or old C-H "H" style press. I would keep the RCBS myself; you will find a need for it sooner or later. And it's already paid for, so its not like you will be loosing money by keeping it. Just the opposite, if your sell it and find a need for another one in the future, it is death and taxes sure that it will cost more to replace it than what you paid for the one you already have in your possession. My opinion anyway.

I'd keep it! I have 3 single stage presses and have all of them set up. I use them for my "Precision" work for my 308Win. Deifinately no worries about re-adjustment from die changes. But that's just me.[:p]
