Both are an excellent choice! The 308 will handle some heavier bullets than the 7mm-08 but you will get better coefficents with some of the 7mm bullets.

I would recommend the 308 due to better availablity and selection of factory hunting ammo over the 7mm-08, but either way you go you made a good choice.


I seriously doubt that when you shoot a deer it is gonna stop and say "WOW That was a 7mm-08!!" It doesn't matter they both do the job VERY well!

.308 or 7-08?

That's like asking if you want a T-bone or a porterhouse. Both are great. It really comes down to personal preference. I personally use a 7-08 loaded with 140 grain Nosler Accubonds. Kills them quite well.

Both will work for anything from gophers to Elk, and Moose. The 308 is more common, and found in more out of the way back country hardware stores, but the 7-08 has a good following too. The 308 ammo can usually be found to be less expensive than the 7MM version.

Like previous person said, deer won't know the any different. I do think the 7mm-08 is all the 308 is with a plus. But I like 7mm better than 30 cals, but I am in the minority.

7-08 will give you a flatter trajectory and less felt recoil. One of my favorite calibers. About perfect for deer sized game. I have a stainless 7, and a titanium 7, and a TC encore in 7-08.
