This rifle shoots 7.5x55, what would happen if I used 7.5x54 french round by accident, I know the french round will chamber with no problems just never fired it. The cases are the same except the 1mm lenght difference...

I don't have my ref. books in front of me but if memory serves, the french round has a smaller base diameter than the french. Anyway the swiss is readly available, both surplus and commercial.

    magicmanml2,

This is not a good idea. The headspace datum is not the same nor are the lengths and diameters. You would probably over-expand the case and potentially get a case failure resulting in a catastrophic release of plasma into your * area.

It is also possible that the firing pin would just push the MAS case forward into the Swiss chamber and nothing would happen. I personally don't like to tempt these fates so I suggest leaving well enough alone and shoot the right ammunition.

Please look at the dimensions and compare them, noting that they are NOT the same. The drawings are not to scale so you have to read the dimensions. This disclaimer is for the other members who love to point this out because they don't read the numbers.

There is plenty of the 7.5 Swiss available on the market and as Mike suggests, just buy it. Most of it that I've seen and shot has been superb. There is no reason to attempt this switch.

    Best.

Thanks for the info, i was not really going to try and shoot the french ammo. I just got a couple of french rounds in a box of eqyptian 8mm mauser rounds. In the effort of trying to find out what it was i noticed it would chamber in my K-31. I just wanted to know what would be the outcome it one was accidentally fired.

Probably nothing bad would happen; the case would probably fireform. But something bad MIGHT happen.

I'm going to up the ante a little bit, as I reload for both and have several rifles in each chambering. I would say it WILL be a problem. I sometimes fireform 6.5 x 55 to the MAS chamber, and although the critical dimentions work, the 6.5 is a little smaller in the base area (the area that won't really fireform) and about 5 reloads is all I get. The difference between the French and Swiss is MUCH larger than the difference between French and Swedish, so I'm pretty sure (although as NoNonesense pointed out, the firing pin MIGHT just shove it forward without igniting)that kind of stretch would result in a BAAAAAAD day for 'Ya. I would scour my ammo supply and make sure there are NOOOOO 7.5 French rounds you might accidentally drop in the K-31. Also, the case head is not fully supported in the K-31, so now you have another pressure issue to deal with. Be careful, and as mentioned, please sort your ammp carefully! Have fun though, the rifles chambered in these rounds are really a blast to play with. LOVE my 49/56 and 36/51's, and the K-31's are super spiffy and built oh so nicely!
