i was looking through custom guns on GB and saw a 257 STW. i looked back through this morning and couldn't find it. i was just wondering if this is a real caliber and if it is pretty much the weatherby magnum or 25-06.

I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

It is head and shoulders above the 257wthby mag. It is the 8mm rem mag case necked down to 257. You can expect minimal barrel life with this extrememly overbore chambering.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

that's why there aren't many out there.[;)] Now kirby allen has designed his own Ultra Low Drag bullets that are extremely long and would no doubt take up some of the case capacity and make use of the slower powders,..but I would not give the barrel any more than about 600rnds of competitive throat life.

If I'm not mistaken the STW stood for Shooting Times Westerner? [8D]

yep,..the 7mm stw is the 7mm shooting times westerner,..which is a 8mm rem mag necked down to 7mm.

I would either stick to a 7mm rem mag or go to the 7mm RUM. The RUM in my opinion needs a 28" barrel at least and a heavy twist to use the 175-180gr pills to be as efficient as possible. I would want no more than a 9 twist and would prefer an 8 twist.

Keep in mind the 7mm stw is already wayyyy overbore, so the 257 stw is extreme. The 7mm rem mag is said to be overbore by a hair,..so anything much bigger is a barrel burner for small gains in velocity.

The 257 roberts AI or 25-06 is as far as I would go. The 257WSM or 257RSAUM would be slightly overbore, but far more efficient IMHO.

If you like overbore, you'll love this: RCBS currently makes dies for the .25-300 Ultra Mag. As a quarter bore fan, I plan to build one. I also expect to rechamber it every 1000 rounds or so. But just imagine the trajectory of a 117 gr. Sierra BTSP with a MV of 4,000 FPS +![:D][:D][:D][:D]

Save the seals-club a liberal instead.

i would never want something like that anyways. i do want a 300 RUM, in the remington 700 police sniper. really seems pointless to me to make a cartridge like that. i thought it was a 25-06 or 257 wby mag that had been tinkered with a little bit. thanks for the info.

Hunter375,....I have my match rifle chambered in 300RUM right now. That is far less overbore than the 25-300. I expect NO MORE than 1000rnds competitive life before it has to be set-back,..so you can figure far less than that for the 25-300rum. It would be fun,..but expensive to keep it in supply of fresh barrels.[;)] I'd give it 600-700 maximum life before groups and ES and SD start to get erratic. But wildcatting is fun,..so if the money isn't an issue,..go for it.[8D]

I was browsing for info and found this thread. Kirby Allen is actually about to do some work on my .257 STW. I am going with a 28" barrel this time. The best velocity I had gotten from a 26" was 3900 f.p.s. I am an admin at the handloadersbench.com. Kirby's brother Korey is also there. You guys should come by and check us out.
