sounds like it was bored to fire a common parlor pistol cartridge at the time.

i THINK (not know, THINK) that the Germans used a 4mm inside primed center fire as a subcaliber training round- dimly recall seeing a barrel insert for pistols that allwed the 4mm to be fired- indoor, short range. Possibly the same rd. Have one cartridge in my collection, xrayed, and durned if it is not center fire. Cute little cartridge.

Hello Try to open the bolt if it pivots in the middle and is spring loaded all the way back then it is an air rifle. .177

Gun was definitely made as a 4mm."Barrel" is actually a shroud over the shorter actual barrel for the. 4mm.round,has a nice cover that keeps stuff out of the barrel shroud and must be opened to fire.Looks like the typical .22 trainer just made for the 4mm.Has the nazi markings and is very well made with most of the original bright bluing. Missing the sling, cleaning rod and the floorplate screws, probably lost when "liberated" and brought to the USA.

Some of the markings are "Buschen Sportmodell Nurnberg" Eigentum Des Sportamtes" and on the barrel "Germaniawaffenwerk A-G Zella Mehlis"alo what looks like-T-G-A.I have taken pictures but don't know how to post them on this site.

Although made by Anschutz, your rifle might be covered in this book that describes the training rifles that Mauser made between the Wars. Many different German manufacturers made similar training rifles during this period during the run up to World War II, although they were predominately chambered for the .22 rimfire cartridge.
