Which 308 ?

I am thinking about a new 308 and am looking for opinions on what I should buy for around $1000. I haven't seen the new Model 70 yet and don't even know if they have a 308. I've been looking hard at the Kimber Longmaster and Montana. I would use this as a Deer rifle and for Antelope if I ever get a tag. I was looking at ballistic comparisons and don't see much difference between the 308 and a 30-06. What am I missing and what advantage is there to having the 308. Forgive me as I'm not a ballistic expert. Thanks, Ken

My sniper friend told me that Remington has come out with a new rifle chambered in a 7.62NATO/ AKA 308. This rifle is said to fire a sub Minute of Angle (MOA). Which means it will place 3 shot in less than 1in circle at 100yds. For the life of me I can not recall the model, but it is based on the 700 model. Once again I was told that it retailed under $700, well under.

As for the accuracy the 308 is slightly more accurate than the 06. However, it is unlikey that you will notice seeing as how you will be shooting at targets under 300yds most of the time.

For a great rifle chambered in .308 that will be accurate and handy in the field take a look at the Tikka T-3 and most of the the Savage models. They are both great rifles that have wonderful triggers and are also both at the top of the game when it comes to accuracy. The Tikka has better fit and finish than the Savage but it does not shoot any better. With the money you save over buying a Kimber, Winchester or Remington you can buy a real nice top quality scope.

At the ranges you shoot you will not be missing anything buy choosing a .308 over a 30-06. The main factor between the two is that you can shoot heavyer bullets out of the 30-06, if you were going after elk or moose that may be a consideration, but it is not for deer and pronghorn.

    joken,

Before everyone here gets carried away spending your money on a rifle, you really need to consider a scope and how much you want to spend on it with the rings and base. It does you NO good to spend $1,000.00 on a rifle then tell us you can only afford a Simmons for a scope. You will never realize the accuracy that your rifle is capable of with cheap glass, rings and base. Consider the glass first and the rifle second.

    Best.

hi joken, just a couple of quick questions.do you hand load? do you ever plan to start? the reason i ask is because there is a greater variety/availability of factory ammo (different weight projectiles on the shelf at wally world) for the '06 than for the .308. as far as ballistics go a .308 cal. bullet of 150 grains traveling 2400fps muzzle velocity does just that. no matter if it comes out of a .308, 30-06 .300 win. mag. .300 ultra mag. etc. now the food for thought. every barrel on a production rifle is just a tich different. some a bunch different. two brand new rifles of the same caliber, firing the same ammo will conograph differently. some a little, some alot. one shoots moa groups with 130 gr. projectile, won't hit the same place twice with 165 gr. projectile. the point of this story is.....if you hand load the world is yours. if you need to find out what your rifle shoots best using factory ammo. you may want the larger variety. one more tid bit of infromation....... i have heard more than once from knowledgeable gun nuts that the .308 is the best all around case capacity per bore ratio ever invented. choose wisely

Thanks, I appreciate the opinions. I have a VX-III 4.5x14 B&C that I might take off my 338 elk rifle and put on this 308. I have a spare VXII 3x9 as well. Rem has a Mod 700 VSF in 308 with a 26" fluted barrell and a HS composit stock. The rifle has been discontinued, but I located one NIB for $819 which looks like a real good price. I sure like the looks of the Kimbers though. I'm going to go touch the Remington after work.

I shoot a Savage 10FP w/ Burris Fullfield II 6.5-20X50. I realize the 10 FP is a heavy barrel, but I shoot outstanding groups with this combonation in .308. Savage was compared to ridiculously priced bolt guns in .308 and was found to out-perform or perform as well as any of them. And for your $1000, you could have a fine shooter AND glass for your needs out to 800 yards. If you don't reload, go with Federal Premium Gold Medal Match 168gr. HPBT for 300 yards and their 175gr. out past 300.

Buy a $250.00 Stevens, then spend the rest on the best scope you can get.

Match the scope to the gun. Marlin 60 .22 I have a cheap $30 scope on for plinking. I'm contemplating a savage BVSS model 12; for that, I don't see a need to buy a $1000 scope but buy a decent one as others say.

My vote goes for Savage. The model 10 or 12. Your choice which one, they're all pretty nice.

1 MOA? That's good, but using match bullets and iron sights, my Swiss K31- a combat rifle- can shoot about 1.5 MOA, so I'd be a bit disappointed if any brand name modern gun with good ammo and a scope couldn't do 1 MOA.
