pre ban & post ban differences

I know of the assault rifle ban of 1987. I know the post bans will have thumbhole grips, no recoil muzzles, no high cap mags, bayonet and cleaning rod holders ground off. Unless you make them 922r compliant. I have heard the pre ban AK's are better weapons and much more expensive. Why are they better weapons? Is it because they use different and/or better parts than post ban?

Ni I believe you are talking about the 1989 import ban which IS still in effect. This ban is also called the "non-sporting" ban, it states what features are not "sporting". This ban is what makes real Uzi's, Galil's, AK's, FAL's, more expensive then later ones built in the US using parts kits.
This is also why you don't some of the new guns that are being made over seas for sale here.
The 1994 ban was pretty much a copy of the 89' ban but was placed on the domestic (US made) firearms. The 1994 ban expired in 2004.
Update
There is not a 1987 law that I am aware of. There is one in 1986 that deals with MG and traveling with firearms. Then there is the 1989 ban which is the one dealing with imported firearms like you are refering to.
Thanks again for your help.
Now I know why you guys make the big bucks! [:)]
