I appreciate those of you who gave me your opinions on the less than 600 .22 - last night my dad talked some sense into me. I've now decided to go with a cheaper .22 for now - and if I do become a competitive shooter in the future I could upgrade then. So here we go again. < 300, with peep and tang sights preferrably. I've been thinking about the savage mark II fvt for ~310 at walmart. I've also considered doing w/o the peep and tang, and going with one of the cheaper cz 452 versions at around 300. If anyone has any advice, it would be much appreciated. If you think used is best, please link where I can get it from - I am a little weary of auctions, but would be willing to try it. Again, thanks for your help.

    sabb,
Check this out, especially the 75 Target. Picks looks pretty good. (Stock is standard, I believe, but pic makes it look REAL short![:)]

I have a CZ 452 in 17 HMR. It has been a great rifle, and the quality compares favorably with more expensive rifles. If you can find one in your price range, or perhaps a used one, I would recommend it. It weighs about 6.2 pounds, and feels almost like a full size big game rifle in your hands. Some 22s are so small and light that they feel like toys. The CZ feels like a rifle for serious shooting, and it is. My 17 HMR shoots about 1 inch at 100 yards.

The blueing, stock finish, workmanship, and fit and finish are comparable to my Anschutz Model 1415/1416, and that says a lot, because the Anschutz is a very fine rifle as well, but it costs twice as much as the CZ.

When I received my new CZ 452 about a year ago, I did spend a little money with my gunsmith honing the trigger a bit, because I am very particular about smooth triggers and crisp pulls.

One thing to keep in mind about the safety on the CZ: you push it forward for safe, and pull back to fire. It is a very positive safety, but the positions are opposite what most of us are used to here in the US.

Please identify what dicipline you want to shoot. NRA three-four position? Prone? Sihloutte?

My dad uses somthing like this but thirty years older,

incredible little rifle ,we shoot thumbtacks with it at 75 ft I have seen them used around 250 - 350 range , he has won several rifle competitions using it (INDOOR SMALLBORE)

also was down at the CMP last week they had some real nice H&R rifles , no sights for 225.00 but sights can be had fairly cheap if you look for them ,I have bought several sets of sights off of e-ay
    anshutz, redfields,

I think the most important part is to get a rifle and use it , learn it , and practice practice practice

The Savage is hard to beat for accuracy.
