Model 70 question

Being mostly a REM. kind of guy, I have a question on Winchesters, or any other with similar configurations. What is the purpose of the screw that is forward of the action screws and that screws into the barrel buldge? How should it be torqued? To what? THX HAWKSHAW

Question for M70 experts out there......

I am going to have a custom stock made for an M70 lightweight. I need to know what the barrel contour is on this model. Is it the same as the featherweight models or does it use the standard barrel channel? Any help would be appreciated.

Have a customer with a "post 64" model 70 in 7x57 Mauser. He is questioning which is better or easier to do...rebarrel to 25-06 or 257 Roberts...any suggestions? Advice? Shilen or Douglas barrel? forseeable problems?

Hello most times a custom stock maker will want the barreled action to fit the stock to the Barreled action. I for one would be Ok with a replacement from Cabela's etc but not a custom stock . Just a thought.

Edit I have seen different barrels on different model 70's that were at gun shows and the sellers all called them Lightweight .[?] sorry Check with Brownells's tech department Maybe or Winchester customer service with the caliber and serial number.

I don't really want to send the action to the stockmaker. They have tooling set up to inlet the action to either a featherweight, standard, or heavy barrel. I just need to know if the lightweight model used the featherweight or standard barrel.

Ask the stock maker if you can supply a series of measurement off the barrel. Get him to tell you what he wants measured and where. Preferable while you are measuring he is on the phone confirming that the numbers are what he wants. If worse comes to worse error on the small side as you can alwayxs open the barrel channel up where as it is tougher to go the other way....

The model 70 lightweight barrel contour is the SAME as the model 70 featherweight contour. I know this because I took a model 70 lightweight and put it in a featherweight stock. NO DIFFERENCE, fit perfect.
