"DS" stands for Detective Special. These were the second generation ( shrouded ejector rod, etc ) Detective Specials, that Colt put on the market starting in the 1980's.

I don't recall seeing them made in stainless though? Is it possible that it's plated?

Best bet for a ball park fair market value, would be the on-line auctions. Detective Specials are quite common, they show up regularly on the auctions. Disregard the sometimes ludicrous, asking prices. Just the actual selling price. Note also the first generation Detective Specials are priced differently then the second generation guns, take that into account.

In 1995, Colt came out with the SF-VI (Small Frame Six shot) with an action unlike either the original Detective Special or the Trooper Mk III and V. Then they renamed it DS-II (Detective Special Two) to capitalize on the name of the well known earlier model. Then they beefed it up a bit and chambered it for .357 Magnum and called it the Magnum Carry. The whole bunch did not last but five years.

I don't know the dollar value, but the three inch is the least common variant.

Now you get to decide who is right.
