870 Rem. express question

I have a 870 express my friend has a 870 express magnum. We were looking at them the other day and found out they look alike.My question is they both shoot 3 inch shells his is marked magum and mine is not. So we measured the breech opening and they are the same size. 3 1/16 inches.My bbl. say's 2 3/4 or 3inch on magum receiver's.But I've have shot 3 inch several times and the gun ejects them fine with no hang up's.It's and older 870 so I though it might have been made to shoot 3 inch. And comment's thank's.

    Does your serial number begin or end with the letter M? If so it is a magnum receiver it is just from before they started stamping "MAGNUM" on them.
