luger serialization questions value

I have the chance to purchase a luger with the seral number in the 44000's I'm wondering if anyone can give me an approximate manufacture date? In 90% condition, what would be fair market pricing on this pistol?

Serial numbers on Lugers are not unique. They are more like a sequence number. Generally, they went from 0001 to 9999, then started over again. Often, a letter suffix was added. If there is a 2 digit number stamped on the top, that may well be the year it was made.

Without photos & a detailed description of condition & markings, I can't begin to guess the market value. There are hundreds of Luger variations.

Obviously, there's no date prominantly marked on top. Or you wouldn't be asking such a question.

In this case, all the submarkings are needed to assertain DOM.

By the way, my Luger (P08) is 4491-k. Made by Mauser in 1937.

You will help yourself considerably if you posted closeup shots of all the markings you can find on the exterior of the gun. And on the magazine. Best, Joe

A five digit Parabellum serial number is not normal. We need pictures of all markings, especially the proofs on the right hand side.

Those who have responded to your question seem focused on the military Lugers. What they say about serial numbers going up through 9999 is correct for military Lugers.

The DWM Commercial Lugers have serial numbes that reach as high as 69000 according to Luger Variations by H. E. Jones.

The commercial luger came in 7.62 as well as in 9mm Parabellum cal. My Luger books are old but can probably help you get an approximate date for your luger.

If you will give me the barrel length, cal., grip safety or not, any other markings such as "Germany" or "Made in Germany" I will try to help you identify what you have. It will probably have the B U and G proofs.

Collector Dwight Gruber has done this extensive study of the Commercial Lugers on this web site run by Jan Still :

In addition, Dwight's datebase of reported Commercial Luger serial number and gun attributes can be downloaded or viewed at this link of a pdf-file :
