Is a 25 WSSM a good round? How longe range is it? Is it accurate? What is a good gun for it?

Can anyone direct me to reloading info for the 25 wssm? I have a Hodgdons manual, but most of there loads are H- powders,(immagine that)I would like to see something with Dupont or other powders.

About to buy a 25 wssm. Wondering what would be a better rifle the Winchester model 70 coyote or the browning a-bolt? Thanks

    moretoys,

I use Heavy bullets only in the 25 WSSM so the powders I use are in the slightly slower category. Mostly you can consider:

    AA-XMR-4350

    Ramshot Big Game

    IMR-4350

    V V N-150

    V V N-550

These powders work with bullets from 87 grains up to the 120 grain heavy weights so long as you have a slightly longer barrel than those stupid 22" barrels. If you want the short barrels, you need to work with powders that are one step faster.

Here is an article that features several powders and bullet weights:

    http://www.gunsandammomag.com/reloads/0511/

This is the cached reloading data from the WSSM Zone. Follow the links to the reloading data:

    http://www.wssmzone.com/main/default.aspx?c=reloading&c2=reload257&n=reloading

    And from Nosler:

    http://www.nosler.com/index.php?p=15&b=25cal

It's a superb cartridge and well worth the effort of load development.

    Best.

    moretoys,

I have two rifles in 25 WSSM. One, a stupid short barrel(I agree with nononsense), and two, the better long barrel. My loads that I've come down to for my long rifle is 44.5 gr. of H4350x behind a 115 Berger. Same for a 115 Partition or BT. 45 gr. for a 110 Accubond. 43 Gr. for a Sierra 120 and a 120 Partition.

The loads I use the most in my short barrel are VV N140. I used 46 gr. of VV N140 behind a 75 gr. V-max. That was before Hornady's 7th edition came out and shows a max of 45.1 with a velocity of 3550. I was only getting 3510. But still that is a smoking hot little round. I also used 44 gr. of H4895x behind that same bullet(and the Sierra for a velocity of 3475). I found a 100 gr. bullet in front of 41 gr. of VV N140 to be pretty hot in my rifle. Accuracy was better in front of only 40.0 gr. I worked up to 47.5 gr. of H4350x for a velocity of about 3072. My short barreled rifle has a twist of 1-10" but doesn't get really good accuracy with heavier bullets. It also has a thin profile. It just seemed to best with lighter bullets at moderate speeds.

There are a bunch of good loads published @ www.reloadersnest.com

Something to keep in mind with this round is the pressure curve gets steep fast when near the top. So, whatever your normal incremental increases are, cut that by 1/2 or 1/4.
