head space

I have had a replacement barrel put on a browning a-bolt. The gunsmith said he had the head space at six thousands. My question is that good. What standard would be expectional and what is not so good, and what are normal factory standards? thanks, Joe.

There is the minimum spec (what a GO gauge is) and not to exceed spec (what a NO-GO gauge is) for each cartridge. Anything between the 2 is acceptable, what your smith is saying is that your headspace is GO + .006 (but shorter than the NO-GO).
Factory spec is anything between GO and NO-GO is acceptable.

.006 sounds like the ragged edge of acceptable, for a custom barrel.

    What caliber, however ?

I prefer minimum headspace, on a rifle I build... I want a slight bit of 'feel as the bolt closes on the 'Go' gauge.

I understand the mechanics of a clean chamber and reloading, however.

This doesn't necessarily apply to a rifle you will be taking to Africa, where perhaps you will need to shake the dirt out of the chamber at some point and fire another round.
