Can yall help me with approx age of an inherited item? Sad story that I'm sure you've all heard before...dad recently committed murder/suicide (dad & mom) using a shotgun I finally recovered from investigators. I have since learned that the gun was most likely originally owned by my grandfather who passed away before I was born in early 60s.
BTW, I'm a female who can answer questions about raising boys but I Dunno Bout Guns [:)], really.
Things I've learned since/about the event is that the gun is a Stevens Model 311 Series H, serial # D511xxx, 12ga, dbl barrel. Was told he used 3" 00 (dbl aut? alt? ). Needless to say, there is a bit of 'DNA' remaining on the gun but other than that it is a beautiful gun...if beautiful is an appropriate adjective to use when describing a gun.
Any help on estimating the age would be greatly appreciated.

The Stevens 311 was originally produced under the Springfield name, and changed to Stevens in 1948. It was produced until 1989. It was a working man's shotgun- value would be about $250-350, depending on condition, Sorry I can't nail down production date better- someone else may. The term "double ought" refers to a buckshot load consisting of size 00 (that's zero zero) pellets. Any "DNA" on the shotgun should be removed promptly, or will etch metal parts.

I am sorry for your loss- had a very good friend that lost a son that way, and I know the grief of family members can be immense. Prayers and good thoughts for your family. BTW, if you don't have someone you can talk with about this, please find someone. Yeah, it hurts- but it does help. Hurt does not go away, but can get smaller.

I believe (but don't quote on this), that it was made sometime after 1968.
