k98 7.62x39 sporter?

A local shop has a k98 reciever with a Numrich 7.62 x 39 barrel. He has fired it, but it needs finishing. He is retired miitary and is 70. I trust him. It has been sitting in his safe for 6 years. The stock is synthetic and is ugly. I'll throw it away. I have a magazine/trigger guard to replace the one he took off. He said that it doesn't eject the short brass very well, otherwise, it's good. He wants $160. Any input on this for a project? Thanks...Rob.

part of the problem with the 7.62x39 in a mauser action is the case head is smaller than the standard 8mm. the extractor dosen't get a good grip on the fired case and the ejection is problematic. for best results the bolt face (rim)should bet 'bushed' for the smaller case.

Midway and Brownell's, both, also sell a '98 extractor with an over-length claw, to be custom-fit for use with smaller-head cartridges. Combined with Mike's suggestion of bushing the bolt face, this ought to solve any extraction problems. Feeding from the magazine might be touchy, too, due to the vastly different case dimensions of the 7.62x39 as opposed to the various Mauser cartridges (7mm, 7.65mm, 8mm) that most K98 models were chambered for.

    Hi bang bang,

Just a note to let you know that the Numrich Arms barrel is probably a .308 groove. This means that you can reload your ammo and use the 30 cal. neck expander instead of the standard 7.62x39 31 cal. Most dies come with both options. Ammo like Wolf uses ,310 bullets.

The Numrich barrel allows you to use standard 30 cal. bullets!!!
I put one of these together using a Columbian M98. I also purchased the magazine conversion kit from Numrich. Your friend probably has it in his. The kit consists of a nylon block which is placed in the mag. box as a spacer and a spring with a shortened follower. You might need to do a little rail work so the cases feed properly, simply taper the rail so they feed better. The extra long clawed extractor would be nice. I bent a standard one slightly which solved the problem.

I have put this project on the backburner and have not done any reloading for it yet. I have the brass, dies, powder, etc. I plan on using Speer 130 GR. .308 HP's or 125 gr. .308 TNT's. Maybe 2400 powder. I have pics of my project and will put them on my web pages for you if you like. [8D]

Thanks for the info! The fellow doesn't have the magazine nylon thing. I doubt that he modified the bolt. I think that he got it started, but then parked it. Maybe a dumb question, but could this gun be modified easily (rechambered?) to shoot .308? Not against it as a 7.62x39, but am open to either. I would think that it is worth the asking price just for the action. I would like to see pictures. What is you website?

    Thanks......Rob

Sorry about the web page appearance. I threw it together just now. I am using a web page builder program that I am not familiar with.[:I]

I hope all enjoy the project description.[^]

OOOPPPSSSS Sory but I forgot your question. I think this could be rechambered for the 308 but I'd have a qualified gunsmith check it out first. I was thinking at one time that I would have mine rechambered to 300 Savage caliber. I changed my mind when I fell into a bunch of 762x39 reloadable brass. When I get the time I hope to work up a load for mine.

Jim, great pages and info. The pictures are like a text book. Thanks a bunch. You have me almost talked into trying it. Gotta get that government handout tax refund coming.

My website is going through a rebuild, check it out.... militaryshooter.com

I am adding the info back as I have time. I just switched over to a new platform and template.
