Old Musket

I have this old smooth bore Musket handed down to me. I've been told it was a flint lock, converted to a cap lock. I've tried to find some info on this gun but couldn't find muck. I have had it apart and there aren't any numbers that I can see. The barrel was silver in color, and the barrel is 40 1/2" total gun length is 56". looks like about a 62 or 64 cal. Just a guess.

Sorry the pics aren't the best. I was told it dates back to 1776, I have my doubts. Any info would be great. Thanks.

The side plate and the barrel bands look like the ones on a Charleville. They were in the caliber range you are refering to. The pics aren't bad but could use more. Too bad it still didn't have it's flinter.

Its a Napoleonic french type, something of knock-off of the Charleville. Likely made for the French but not made in France, probably in Austria or one of Napoleon's other occupied countries.

My Dad bought me one almost identical in Mobile, Alabama in 1940 for $1.50. These were imported by the South in the Civil War. You could have Confederate relic. If you can prove its provenance, it would be worth serious money.

It has been mentioned in the family about the civil war. Interesting. I also have another old muzzle loader with a heavy octagon barrel with a small rifled cal. That one has Remington stamped on the barrel under the stock. I'll get some pics and post them. Pretty neat to think where these guns have been and who handled them. Thanks for the Replies.

Looks like you might have a Model 1816 Contract Rifle. These were based on the design of the Charlesville if I'm not mistaken. Mine is a Springfield made in 1834.

Does yours have any writing in front of or behind the hammer or on top oif the rear of the barrel?

Some pictures of mine for you to compare.

They are real similar, the carved out cheek piece in the stock and the trigger guard look different. Yours is in better shape than mine. I would like to restore the silver barrel, but don't dare put the wire wheel to it. LOL

The only markings I've found is these.

There is what looks like the letter ( T ) stamped above these markings too.

This is the other old ML rifle I have. It is stamped Remington on the barrel under the stock.

Yes, I thought it looked like someone tried to make some changes to the Lock assy. It doesn't work properly. I don't know why, maybe the original broke. Who Knows. I was just curious to what year it was made.
    Thanks
