I bought a pre 64 Varmint in .220 Swift that has cleaned up beautiful! The bore,throat and rifling are excellent after a overnight soak and clean. The floorplate and bottom of trigger guard has a light freckling,I have rubbed with croker(sp?)sack cloth and oil, what is the best way to clean up the freckling and if I had to polish it out did Winchester use rust blue on floor plate&trigger guards? very best

    Also. It had a target type (Unertl) scope mounted before I bought it,I put filler plug screws in the barrel and front reciever holes,rear reciever was factory drilled,will Leupold pre 64 long action scope base (1 piece)work on this gun? very best

    I ended up cleaning it up with kroil and copper or brass wool. mounted a fixed 10x leupold on this bad boy,after 4 fouling,sighting in shots I put 3 touching black on an orange stick on target dot. this thing loves Hornandy 55 gr moly varmint express. Winchester built a real mod 70 in 1959! very best

    Cattlebuyer;
    Remember the barrel should be stainless steel, coated in iron oxide to facilitate blueing. Touch up may not be what you think. The Leupold scope mount should work fine. 1959 issue? I'm still lookin for a 1952 issue..
    Have fun, keep your powder dry.
