I was thinking about buying a browning a-bolt chambered in 25wssm. I dont know much anout the 25. I have the same gun in 223wssm and i love it. Is the 25 enough knockdown power for deer?? Any of your input would help. Thanks

I've seen several whitetails shot with the 25 WSSM and hit in the boiler room they went 40 yards or so and down; factory ammunition. I think the results with the 25 WSSM should be about the same as the 257 Roberts or 25-06; probably somewhere in between but doubt that the deer can tell the difference.

I have a 223 WSSM too (Browning A bolt Stainless Stalker) and loved it the first year I had it. Now can't get good groups with a variety of handloads (1.5 to 3 inches at 100 yards). Are you having any accuracy problems with yours?

I had so many problems with my browning 223 wssm that i gave it to friend to try loads (thinking it was just me. 12 different powders, 40,55 ang 69 grain bullets, long and short OAL. Then I tried bedding- (which was some of the problem) finally I just gave up and bought a new barrel in a 25 wssm. There is a forum for wssm and on the forum there are countless guys have the exact same accuarcy issues. I think the load is so hot compounded with the light barrel which browning uses casues mant problems from fouling of the barrel, to distorting of the barrel with the heat, to many contact points to the stock which change as it heats up all adding up to the large groups. My .02!

    MrGunz22,

The 25 WSSM is plenty of power to knock down a deer. I've shot Mule deer, antelope, and an elk with the 'less powerful' .257 Roberts. I have to say with my limited entrance into loading the WSSM cartridges that I think the 25 WSSM is the best. I think that because of the ratio of the diameter to that of the case body and length of the body.

I own two. One a hunting rifle, and one a target rifle. That is how much I think of the 25 WSSM. It gives 25-06 velocities on .257 Roberts loads.

The only thing I will warn you against is while working up loads, pressure curves take hard right at the very top. Meaning you can work up normal loads, all goes great until the last 1/2 to 1/10th grain which can give you some high pressure signs.

    EDIT:

    joes,

I don't know if you posted or read on another thread about this, but nononsense gave a good description of what was causing accuracy problems with the WSSM's. You're right in that it is caused by super hot loads. The indicator is a built up ring of carbon right at the beginning of the lands. I haven't had this phenomena go on with mine but I let the bores soak in 'Bore Foam' awhile each time I shoot them.

I have a winchester coyote in 223wssm. the first one i couldnt keep on paper. found out that many were recalled because the chrome lining of the chamber got into the rifling. thus killing accuracy. sent it back and they sent me a new one.
    the new one works better.

I have a browning hunter in 25 wssm and shot 5 deer this year. I love the gun and caliber. Very light, I was shooting 117 gr SST and IMR 4350. Shoots well. Light enough to walk for several miles like I did and not get heavy either. Plenty of power for deer. You'll like the recoil.

Ive killed 3 deer with my .25wssm this winter,I hunted with a Win mod 70 Coyote Lite,4.5x14-40mm Lup with the varmint ret. All three were bang flop shots 60,112 and 240yd shots factory ammo, 2 were with 115gr BTs' and one was with the 120gr PEPs.My .223wssm is a Wally World Super Shadow truck gun that is a two shot one holer the third is always a 1.5 inch drunk flier due to hot load and thin barrel, good news is one shot gets the job done!

In order to keep gun sales moveing with the future they come up with differant configurations like the 243 wsm 25 wsm 270 wsm 300wsm.thease are same caliburs just shortend with a bigger case 25wsm was from the 25-06 whitch is a good calibur for meadium size animals like deer and antalope. the 25 is a flat shooting calibur out to 300+ yards

I have a model 70 Ultimate Shadow SS, in 25WSSM. It was in need of some TCL out of the factory box...trigger adjustment, and pillar bedding. It now is a great shooter, and I have killed a half dozen deer with it from ranges of 100 to 450 yards. It is a 3 shot groupe4, just a little over half MOA. it will open up 5 shots to almost 1.5 MOA. The deer were all taken with factory 85 grain BST, and the 110 Accubonds.

I am currently trying to work up a load for the 100 grain Barnes XLC, and TSX.
