this is a pic of the gun

in this engraving it looks like a crown that the top has worn off
under that is the initals G.R and under that is 1918 and under that is the letters SHT ( the ht is smaller than the S and have dots under them) beside that is larger initals L.E
under that is a roman numeral 3 and a large astrick? symbol

this pic is at the front of the bolt and it is a R with 48856 under that ( on the opposite side of the gun there is a small crown with a large X with the initals G.R in the top of the X in the bottom of the X is the letter P. there are some more markings here but they are really hard to read. also if the gun was standing on the butt pointing up right below the large X there is the engraving FTR 1953

in this pic has markings beside the safety and under that is looks to be ENGLAMD <<< not a typo and right under the D is a sidways C that kinda goes up into the D making it look like a B sorta

    Hello Jdprice,
It looks like you have a sporterized Lee-Enfield, as the stock has been cut down or replaced. Judging by the date stamped on it it might be a SMLE Mk. III, but I'm not an expert on these rifles and only know the basics, but I'm sure someone else will come along with more info. BTW, is there any way you could make the picks larger?

FWIW, the Brtish mark their arms with the initials of their ruler (since the arms belong to him/her) Your SMLE was made during the reign of King George V, so is marked GR, for George Rex. For more info on your rifle, try www.surplusrifle.com

Back in the late fifties/early sixties my dad used to come home from Philadelphia almost every weekend with a new Lee Enfield. At the time they were selling in the 12 to 14 dollar range. Nice shooting rifles.
